The 13 Kibbe Body Types
David Kibbe's style-essence system classifies every body along a single axis — yin (soft, curved, rounded) to yang (sharp, angular, elongated). Every archetype is a point on that spectrum.
Yin
Soft, curved, rounded, lush. Full cheeks, hourglass curves, soft-edged bones. Romantic is pure yin.
Yang
Sharp, angular, elongated, lean. Chiseled features, taut flesh, narrow or broad-blunt bones. Dramatic is pure yang.
Contrast
Some types blend both (Soft Gamine, Theatrical Romantic). Finding your blend is the Kibbe test.
Where the 13-type system comes from
David Kibbe introduced the system in his 1987 book Metamorphosis, building on the yin/yang principle from Chinese philosophy applied to body architecture. The original 13 types covered every blend. In 2021, Kibbe officially removed Pure Classic, Pure Natural, and Pure Gamine — the midpoints — because he concluded that no body sits truly 50/50 on the yin/yang spectrum. Everyone leans subtly one way.
That leaves 10 current official types. But the 3 historical ones still appear across older books, TikTok, and Reddit, so we include them too — with guidance to re-test if you were classified into one.
All 13 types by family
Dramatic
Long · narrow · sharp
Dramatic types are tall (5'6"+) with sharp angular bones. The pure-yang archetype is Dramatic itself; Soft Dramatic softens the tall sharp frame with lush curves.
Natural
Broad · blunt · relaxed
Naturals have broad blunt bones and an open, athletic presence. Flamboyant Natural is lean and commanding; Soft Natural adds yin softness to the broad frame.
Classic
Balanced · symmetrical · refined
Classics have moderate, symmetrical proportions. Dramatic Classic leans sharp and polished; Soft Classic leans graceful and ladylike.
Gamine
Petite · contrast · distinct
Gamines are petite (under 5'5") with visible yin/yang contrast. Flamboyant Gamine is punchy and sharp; Soft Gamine is playful and rounded.
Romantic
Petite · lush · soft
Romantics are petite with pronounced hourglass curves. Romantic is pure-yin and classically soft; Theatrical Romantic adds a sharp yang facial edge.
